Never Lose Heart. Never Lose Sight

Many of you may not know, but my mother was battling breast cancer for over a year. On January 16, 2012, she passed away.

I had the privilege of spending a lot of time with her these past few months. We did morning devotions and prayer everyday and I even had the chance to record some stories from her childhood and little bits of wisdom she had to share. The day before she went to the hospital for the last time, I asked her, “What is the most important advice you would give to young people?” She responded, “Always remember your first love. Never Lose Heart. Never Lose Sight.” That was our last real conversation. Those words are branded on my heart forever.

During my mom’s last few weeks at home, she would wear 2XL F!GHT shirts as gowns because they were more comfortable for her (and we had plenty to let her use). I didn’t realize it at the time when I took this picture, but the Fearless shirt she had on was the last things she would wear besides a hospital gown while she was alive.

She really was fearless. Even in the face of death, she always told me, the only thing she wanted in life was to be with Jesus, always living in the presence of God, and now, seeing Him face to face. She lived with purpose, she fought to live with no regrets, she never lost hope, she never gave up, she never stopped loving the Lord and putting others before herself, even when her own body was failing. Even as she goes, I feel empowered, strengthened by the life that she lived, the prayers that she prayed. To us, she leaves behind a legacy of a life lived to its fullest and a message of hope for the future. My heart goes out to all who have lost loved ones or witnessing them suffer. Never give up, never lose heart, never lose sight.
